Why does dental insurance no longer cover kids when they turn 18 and not in college?

my parents dental insurance wont take care of me because im 20 and not in college. my parents can't afford to pay for my college education and I refuse student loans because only kids that are going to college to be doctors can pay student loans back on time with their expected salary.





I need root canals, and like 4 crowns and recently I noticed little dark marks behind/inbetween my three front bottom teeth! like where I floss.





im so angry I wish dental insurance was free for young people like me or that my parents insurance would cover me...only my dad works and he has so many bills and can't afford to pay for my needed dentist work without insurance.





my only choice is to wait seven to eight years when my boyfriend the love of my life! earns his masters plus he is going to law school... till I can go to the dentist. that sucks I can only brush my teeth and floss and pray for a miracle.(I also should stop eating sugary stuff till then and eat select foods only)

You seem to have explored all options except one: Getting a job that includes dental insurance yourself. I mean, Daddy can't take care of you, the government declines the honor, and your boyfriend is not in a position to help at this time. But what about looking for a job? Or if you have one and it does not include dental insurance, look for one that does.





But dental insurance does not cover as large a percentage of the bill as medical insurance does. It will not be a co-pay nominal sum like $10. It will more likely be a deductible of maybe $500, and then pay some 60% to 75% of the bill, with you responsible for the rest. Some dentists will write off all or part of that excess, but you need to ask the individual dentist when you make the appointment if you cannot pay your share.
Reply:How sad for you that your only option is to wait 7-8 years for your boyfriend to take care of you. Have you ever considered getting a job???? That's how the rest of us poor slobs do it. We gotta work to pay for the crappy college eduation that our parents couldn't afford to give us.

The government should take care of all our needs. Some people are out there working every day and we could tax those fools until we have free services for anything we desire.

Reply:Some of the earlier answers are very good. To answer the first part of your question, medical and dental insurance is not free to employers or employees. Premiums are paid to cover the actuarial costs, and frankly, insurance companies aren't in the charity business. Most medical insurance only cover children up to age 18 unless they are full time students in college where it's usually extended to age 24 or 25. It's really the negotiation between your parent's employer and the dental insurance company. If the employer/employees are willing to pay the additional premium, they can change the benefits to included dependent children up to age 24 or 25 if a full time student just like medical insurance. Since your dad's plan is not like that, it seems you'll need to find a job that has a dental insurance plan.
